PRE-ORDER MARTIAN: THE SAINT OF LONELINESS

Those Poems You Liked Are Coming Back Into Style

Cover Art by Wangechi Mutu

I’ve waited HELLA LONG to announce the birth of my new forthcoming collection, MARTIAN: The Saint of Loneliness which drops September 27. And here is the cover reveal, provided by artist Wangechi Mutu! Pre-orders for the book are going on right now. It has won the James Laughlin Award from the Academy of American Poets for a Second Collection of Poems.

I’m excited and overwhelmed and anxious for it to be out in the world. The book has felt like an open secret, an egg I’ve had to sit on for a couple of years — watching and waiting for signs of movement and life. Finally!!

Ummm… So– what is it about? How dare you ask that. I don’t know. Beyond confessing how often I feel alienated, or how America has made me feel about myself as a black man. (SPOILER: It feels mighty lonely.) Its just as fair to say the book wrote itself through me. I’m just a kind of notary or secretary for creative whisperings, and they had a lot to say.

Skimming through a few pages earlier this week, I like it. It feels solid and meaningful. I hope it means something to you too. Why not find out for yourself.
